Oregon NPRC Pilot Grant Program

The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is soliciting proposals for the annual pilot grant research program. The purpose of this funding mechanism is to encourage activities related to the use of nonhuman primates (NHPs) for biomedical research or for studies that enhance NHP welfare or husbandry. Pilot research should be developmental or high-risk and, in the case of biomedical research proposals, should be used to generate preliminary data in support of applications for further project support, such as NIH, other federal, or foundation grants. We encourage proposals from external applicants, early-stage investigators, and researchers new to NHP research.

Applicants are encouraged, whenever possible, to utilize study animals or samples from ongoing studies or biobanks. Studies focusing on the development of new approach methodologies (NAMs) that encompass in vitro, in silico, and in chemico technologies are encouraged.   For more information, please visit the Oregon NPRC Website at:  https://www.ohsu.edu/onprc/pilot-research-program-opportunities

Letter of intent (LOI) deadline:  January 8, 2026,

Full application deadline (if invited):  February 17, 2026

Earliest funding start date:  May 1, 2026

California NPRC Pilot Grant Program

The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) Pilot Program invites Letters of Intent for pilot project proposals to support basic and translational research using nonhuman primates (rhesus macaques or titi monkeys) for the 2026-2027 base grant funding period.

Pilot projects that address biomedical/translational research topics across the nonhuman primate lifespan and include topics addressed in CNPRC scientific research unit areas (Cardiorespiratory Diseases, Infectious Diseases, Neuroscience and Behavior, Reproductive Sciences and Regenerative Medicine) are requested. Applicants are encouraged to use services offered by the CNPRC Cores (e.g., flow cytometry, in vivo imaging, inhalation exposure). Information on Core services can be found on the CNPRC web site: https://cnprc.ucdavis.edu/core-services

The direct costs for a single research project must not exceed $50,000 and are limited to funding during the award period (not to exceed 12 months). In addition to funds provided by the Pilot Program, animals may be included at no purchase or use fee cost as a part of the proposal. The number of animals will depend on the study design and must be determined in consultation with the collaborating Core Scientist.

NPRC Pilot Grant Programs

Each year, the NPRCs award pilot research grants to support innovative studies that include nonhuman primates. The projects are selected based on their potential to generate high-impact preliminary data that will result in research project grants from NIH (e.g., NIH R01 grants) or other sources and be published in peer-reviewed journals.

The number of projects each NPRC supports is determined annually based on the availability of funds.
