Southwest NPRC Pilot Grant Program

The SNPRC Pilot Research Program provides opportunities and support for investigators to use SNPRC nonhuman primate resources in highly focused, short-term studies with a high likelihood of enhancing the value, utility, feasibility and attractiveness of nonhuman primates for biomedical research.

High priority is given to studies that propose to generate preliminary data for applications to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support future research projects. Other studies that are considered responsive to the program’s goals include those that propose to develop new nonhuman primate models of disease, or develop and/or test new research methods, instrumentation or approaches for biomedical research using nonhuman primates. Information on the 2026 SNPRC Pilot Grant Program competition, including due dates for letters of intent and completed applications, can now be found on the SNPRC website https://snprc.org/pilot-research-grant/. Please pass on information regarding this funding opportunity to any investigators that you think might be interested or to the appropriate department for faculty notification. Note that an investigator does not have to be associated with SNPRC or its host institution, Texas Biomedical Research Institute, to qualify for consideration.

Wisconsin NPRC Pilot Grant Program

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is seeking proposals for new pilot research projects. Pilot Research Projects may include preliminary activities on biomedical research topics in keeping with the main research areas of the WNPRC (Regenerative and Reproductive Medicine, Global Infectious Disease, Neuroscience, and Energy Metabolism and Chronic Disease). Additionally, researchers are highly encouraged to include activities related to new approach methodologies (NAMs). To further promote foundational work on aging biology, the WNPRC and Wisconsin Nathan Shock Center (WiNSC) Research Development Core will jointly support one Pilot Research Award focused on aging with an emphasis on metabolism and/or translation in NHPs and/or NAMs. Pilot awards provide a maximum of $70,000 (direct costs) over a two-year period. For more information, please visit the WNPRC website at https://primate.wisc.edu/our-science/pilot-research-awards/.

Washington NPRC Ignition Award Pilot Program

The Washington NPRC will fund two pilot studies (up to $75,000 each) to spark innovative, translational research using nonhuman primate (NHP) models and generate preliminary data for larger grants or future clinical studies. Eligible applicants include research faculty, ESIs, postdocs, and junior faculty (including established investigators pursuing new NHP directions). Each project must include a WaNPRC Core Scientist mentor. Funds may support animal care, procedures, supplies, and salaries. No-cost extensions/carry-forward are not permitted.

Program fit (examples): clinical diagnostics/therapeutics/devices; neuroscience and surgical methods; new/validated NHP disease models; reproductive & developmental biology; immunotherapy; zoonoses; NHP welfare/care/husbandry.

NPRC Pilot Grant Programs

Each year, the NPRCs award pilot research grants to support innovative studies that include nonhuman primates. The projects are selected based on their potential to generate high-impact preliminary data that will result in research project grants from NIH (e.g., NIH R01 grants) or other sources and be published in peer-reviewed journals.

The number of projects each NPRC supports is determined annually based on the availability of funds.
